Descrição: During World War I, cities and villages in north-eastern France have been destroyed by the hundreds and people are living in the ruins. Brave women continue to distribute milk. In the schools, children learn how to use gas masks. Others suffer the burden of evacuation. The landscape shows the desolation of factories systematically destroyed by the enemy, cut-off bridges and floods, mutilated orchards and demolished farm equipment. Just like the Reims cathedral, the village churches suffer massive devastation. The Germans have put blast holes in the Saint-Quentin collegiate and have not respected the cemeteries. Immediately after the war, these battered French landscapes are visited by Clémenceau in Noyon, Poincaré in Château-Thierry and Wilson in Reims.
